Course aims

RYA Keelboat Sailing Training offers an exciting opportunity to learn and race keelboats. Keelboats are the largest of the small sailing boats, designed to be sailed by two or more people. They provide a bridge between small boats and cruisers, offering the benefits of both to beginners learning to sail.

Whether you’re a beginner or looking to enhance your sailing skills, keelboat courses provide a fantastic learning experience. So, hoist the sails and embark on your keelboat adventure!

Course content

  • Level 1 - Start Sailing: This course is for complete beginners. You’ll learn how to sail a keelboat, including leaving and returning, and sailing in all directions 1.

  • Level 2 - Basic Skills: Build confidence and gain the skills needed to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

  • Level 3 - Better Sailing: Improve your sailing skills in various conditions.

Based on your skill level you may be awarded one of the above on completion.

Course pre-requisites

None. No previous experience is required 

What you need to bring

Remember that you will be outdoors most of the day. A range of sporty, layered clothing is best. Jeans are not recommended as they are hard to dry if they get wet. You want to be warm, comfortable, and able to move easily. Waterproof trousers and jackets are provided if required. All safety equipment including lifejackets and harnesses are provided.
