The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is designed for those with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation who want to undertake coastal passages by day and night. The course covers advanced skippering techniques in terms of boat handling and passage making. 

The course content includes passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, passage making and ability as skipper, yacht handling under power, yacht handling under sail, adverse weather conditions, and emergency situations ¹. The course takes place on the water and lasts for a minimum of 5 days.

Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages under the guidance of the instructor. 

Minimum Requirements

To undertake this course, you require a minimum of 15 days of experience, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, and 8 night hours. 

The minimum age requirement is 17 years old.

Minimum Numbers

There are a minimum number required to operate the course, we will contact you if a course is under-subscribed to offer you an alternative date or refund.

An external examiner can be arranged for the exam, this is an additional cost and you would need to allow an additional 2 days. ( Rusty is not allowed on the boat for this due to him being the Instructor)
